Current Research

Carbon Accounting - This work involves refining volume-biomass-carbon estimation methods for live and standing dead trees, developing empirical approaches for (currently) modeled forest carbon attributes, and documenting procedural changes in forest carbon accounting within the Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program.

Resource Assessment - I provide forest carbon summaries to state analysts across the 24-state northern region of the FIA program for use in 5-year reports.

Forest Management Modeling - I continue to work on the development and refinement of the Forest Age Class Change Simulator (FACCS), which is a spreadsheet-based decision support tool designed to estimate forest biomass and carbon stocks under a variety of user-defined management scenarios. This tool was developed around publicly available data found in the FIA DataMart.

Ecosystem Health - I am using FIA data, along with drought indices and other environmental metrics, to examine potential linkages between regional tree dieback and decline across the U.S. The objective of this work is to inform regional silvicultural strategies aimed at mitigating the effects of natural and anthropogenic stress factors on forest ecosystems.

Why is This Important

Forest ecosystems represent the largest terrestrial carbon sink on earth and provide myriad goods and services to society. Improving our understanding of forest biomass and carbon stocks will provide Forest Service customers and clients with a better picture of the forest resource, allowing them to make more informed management decisions.

Future Research

Carbon management - I plan to compare carbon sequestration potential of short- and long-lived tree species along with the carbon fate of associated forest products to assess management options for carbon storage.

Gap dynamics - I plan to build on previous work assessing tree regeneration and recruitment across a continuum of forest canopy gap sizes in northern forests.
